Bon Jovi – Limitless (Review)

Limitless kicks off with a familiar “whoaaah”, as heard extensively on Burning Bridges. There’s a bit of “We Don’t Run”, “Undivided” and “We Weren’t Born to Follow” in this song. And a whole lot of the style that was prominent on This House Is Not For Sale. There’s nothing too surprising about Limitless, and if you listen to it without the expectation of the song crushing their previous mega hits, you can enjoy it as a by-the-book uplifting pop song.

Jon Bon Jovi sings in a lower register, which is a good call, considering upcoming live performances. Jon has had difficulties hitting the high notes lately, so I think it makes sense to write new songs in a lower register. When there are enough new songs in this more comfortable range, performing live will be easier, though fans will not appreciate having too many new songs in a live set. Still, if the whole show is less of a struggle, and Jon’s voice less strained, then maybe there’s a better chance of singing Always like it’s supposed to. While I miss higher-flying melodies of older Bon Jovi albums, I totally understand and support this decision.

Limitless is a decent song. Not fantastic, but something I quite enjoy listening to. It’s just very similar to many of their recent releases, and I’m not too fond of hearing recycled lines, such as “A teardrop in the sea”, which is a song title on Burning Bridges (well, not to the letter, but too close anyway).

The hook “Life is limitless, limitless” is catchy. The lyrics in this song are more of the optimistic Bon Jovi we’ve gotten used to in the past 20 years. It wasn’t always like this, and there were more colors in Bon Jovi’s lyrical palette before settling for self-confident chants. I don’t mind positivity in songs, but sometimes there’s just too much of it in the most recent Bon Jovi records. I really hope there’s more variety on the upcoming album, 2020.

By the way, the middle eight may just be the best part of the song. There’s a beautiful melody, and somehow that’s the most touching part of the song.

I really hope Bon Jovi has more cards up his sleeve. Changing songwriting partners could probably work wonders for Bon Jovi, as we desperately need more tones in the songs. I wouldn’t mind hearing some more contemplative and even angry stuff, as heard on These Days. We need to feel more. Anyway, I’m glad that they’re around, and I’m sure they’re doing their best, but I guess they’re in a position where they don’t need to challenge themselves to push boundaries, or maybe they’re in a bit of an identity crisis. This song is definitely written with radio play in mind, which is kind of what they have to do, but playing it safe just won’t result in anything too memorable.

Bon Jovi – Limitless Lyrics

Wake up, everybody wake up
Here we go, it’s just another day
Another buzz, another beep
Scrub your face and brush your teeth

Out the door, into the street
I fell out of my sleep
A million different faces
All from different places

Swimming in the sea
Trying to keep your head above water
Trying to keep your head above water

On a night like this
One prayer, one wish
Step out off the edge
It’s worth the risk
Life is limitless, limitless
Limitless, limitless

Wake up, everybody wake up
Morning comes, you do it all again
You know the song, it’s on repeat
Found your shoes, can’t find your feet

Grab your wallet and your keys
Better not forget to breathe
Sweat until you’re soaking
Don’t let them see you choking

A teardrop in the sea
Trying to keep your head above water
You’re trying to keep your head above water

On a night like this
One prayer, one wish
Step out off the edge
It’s worth the risk

Life is limitless, limitless
Limitless, limitless
Life is limitless, limitless
Limitless

Left to figure out
What it’s all about
When the sun comes up
And the sun goes down

Is there something more
Than it was before
There’s an open door
What are you waiting for

Life is limitless, limitless
Limitless

On a night like this
One prayer, one wish
Step out off the edge
It’s worth the risk

On a night like this
One touch, one kiss
Step out off the edge
It’s worth the risk

Life is limitless, limitless
Limitless, limitless
Life is limitless, limitless
Limitless, limitless
Limitless, limitless
Limitless, limitless
