Weezer – Hero (Review)

This song is fantastic. Weezer at their best. I really don’t have anything bad to say about this song – it’s a very powerful pop rock song with relatable lyrics. I don’t know about you, but as a kid, I always wanted to be a superhero. I had a cape and a staff weapon like Donatello’s. It was part of the superhero’s etiquette to stay in the shadows and to cover your identity. I went to the forest with the cape on, feeling like a superhero, stayed unnoticed and came back home like nothing special had happened. But it was special. I still feel a rush of energy whenever I put my superhero cape (lab coat) on, before getting on stage. I bet that many other people have a similar feeling when they go do their thing.

Hero reminds me of the best moments of Weezer’s 2010 to 2020 era albums. It’s not typical for a Weezer fan to like all of their albums, but I do. Of course some are better than others. Hero would fit most comfortably on Hurley, but Everything Will Be Alright In The End and White Album are stylistically quite close too.

Along with the new video, Weezer announced that their next album, Van Weezer would be postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak. I guess it’s due to not being able to tour in support of the album. No new release date for Van Weezer has been set as of yet. It makes more sense to push the tour and the album at the same time, but I really hope that the release doesn’t have to be pushed back by a whole year.

Home quarantine music video

So how do you make a music video during the COVID-19 quarantine? You let your fans do it. In the Hero music video, fans help Weezer deliver a letter to the health care workers, and everybody else who’s fighting the battle against the virus, against their will. Reading the letter at the end of the video returns your fate in humanity, if it ever was lost. Thank you, Weezer – we all need encouragement and love during this twisted period in time.

It’s no coincidence that Rivers wears a Kiss T-shirt in the video. Or that Pat plays the bass.

Weezer – Hero (Lyrics)

When I was a kid I thought I’d save the world
Runnin’ round and chasin’ all the criminals
Swingin’ on a web flying in the sky
Shooting lasers from my eyes

But now I know it never was my destiny
It’s not my place in life not who I’m meant to be
and I don’t need the glory, I don’t need the fame
and I don’t wanna wear this cape

‘Cause on the inside
I know it won’t last
on the inside
I’m an outcast

Well everybody needs a hero
But I’m not everybody else
I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone, yeah
You know I tried to be your hero
But I was lying to myself
I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone, yeah

They built you up and then they gonna tear you down
They love you then they hate you if you wear a crown
It’s not that I don’t love to solve a mystery
But life is hard enough with one identity

If silence is the voice of a new generation
Then I can live up to all of your expectations
I’d hammer down hard like mind fist
Then disappear like I don’t exist

And on the inside
I know it won’t last
on the inside
I’m an outcast

Well everybody needs a hero
But I’m not everybody else
I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone, yeah
You know I tried to be your hero
But I was lying to myself
I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone
yeah, I walk alone, yeah
